All right, we’ve got a rare Saturday news update here at The Digital Bits with some potentially BIG breaking 4K news for you all today...

Keep in mind that this isn’t to be considered official until Paramount Home Entertainment makes their actual announcement with a press release, official cover artwork, and all the usual details.

However, it appears that retail and distribution sources are starting to list an Indiana Jones: 4-Film Collection for release on 4K Ultra HD from Paramount with an anticipated street date of 6/8.

And for those of you who may be wondering, that’s just in time for the 40th anniversary of the original Raiders of the Lost Ark on 6/12.

We’ve known that the films were being remastered in 4K since last year, so this isn’t too surprising.

In fact, we’ve had the title listed in our 4K Ultra HD Release List for many months now. But it looks like things are finally heating up for an actual release this summer. [Read on here...]

All right, we have one last news post for you guys today to close out the week and it’s a good one...

The big news is that Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has now officially set John McTiernan’s Last Action Hero for release on 4K Ultra HD on 5/18. The film is presented newly remastered in 4K from the original camera negative with HDR10 high dynamic range and a new Dolby Atmos mix. You’ll also get the original theatrical SDDS mix presented in 5.1 and the original theatrical stereo audio.

Extras on the disc will include an all-new audio commentary with McTiernan, deleted and alternate scenes—as well as an alternate ending—all presented in 4K with HDR10, AC/DC’s Big Gun music video, the original behind-the-scenes featurette, and the theatrical trailer. The Steelbook packaging also includes a Blu-ray copy and a Digital code.

All right, sorry for the lack of an update yesterday. We’re dealing with a plumbing leak here at the house so real life occasionally finds a way to intrude on regular work. Nothing major though and well on the way to being repaired. Just an inconvenience.

We have some announcement news today and a bit of industry news as well.

First up, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has made Paul Greengrass’ News of the World official for Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD release on 3/23, with the Digital release expected on 3/4. Looks like the 4K disc will include HDR10 high dynamic range and Dolby Atmos audio. Extras on will include deleted scenes, feature commentary with Greengrass, and 4 featurettes (Partners: Tom Hanks & Helena Zengel, Western Action, Paul Greengrass Makes News of the World, and The Kiowa). Meanwhile, Screen Media has set Skyfire for Blu-ray and DVD release on 4/6.

Screen Media is also expected to release The Outpost in Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 5/18. [Read on here...]

We’ve got several interesting things to report today here at The Bits, but first some more new disc reviews...

As promised, I posted my review of Hayao Miyazaki’s Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro on 4K Ultra HD from Discotek on Friday night.

Tim has also posted his thoughts on Sam Peckinpah’s Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974), Rudy De Luca’s Transylvania 6-5000 (1985), and Rene Cardona Jr’s Tintorera (1977) all on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics (and, in the last case, with Scorpion Releasing).

And Dennis has checked in with his comments on Sidney J. Furie’s Lady Sings the Blues (1972) on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics as well. [Read on here...]

All right this is just a quick post to round out the week...

We’ve posted a couple new disc reviews today. First up, Tim and I have given John Carpenter’s Prince of Darkness a look in 4K Ultra HD from Scream Factory and found it to be pretty damn solid, with another great 4K film scan and remaster and all the extras you’ve come to expect from Scream (the new Blu-ray in the package features the same 4K scan too). You’ll find that here.

Also, I’ve taken a look at Anthony Spinelli’s Sex World (1977), as newly released on 4K Ultra HD by our friends at Vinegar Syndrome. Yes, it’s an adult title, but we’re not reviewing the film itself—just the disc quality. As this is one of the first such titles to appear in 4K UHD here in the States, the curiosity value makes it worth a look from our perspective. It’s actually a decent film remaster and the review is worth a laugh or two (there’s also nothing offense therein). So do give it a look.

And with a little bit of luck, I hope to have a review of Discotek’s new Lupin the 3rd: The Castle of Cagliostro – 40th Anniversary Collector’s Edition 4K Ultra HD up by the end of the day as well. (The review is up now; you can find it here.) [Read on here...]

We’re starting things off today with this just in from Paramount Home Entertainment: George Cukor’s My Fair Lady (1964) and J.J. Abrams’ Super 8 (2011) are now official for release on the 4K Ultra HD format on 5/25.

My Fair Lady is presented in 4K, mastered from the 2015 8K film scan and restoration of the original camera negative and surviving 65 mm elements.

Both HDR10 and Dolby Vision will be included (this is now confirmed). Audio will be available in the same English 7.1 Dolby TrueHD mix found on the 2015 Blu-ray edition.

There are no extras on the 4K disc itself, but the package will include that same Blu-ray (along with a Digital code). [Read on here...]

Today’s big news is that Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has finally officially set Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 1984 for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 3/30. The Digital release is expected on 3/16, with PVOD rental set for this week on 2/12.

The 4K Ultra HD release will include Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HDR10+ high dynamic range, with Dolby Atmos audio. Extras will include 8 featurettes (The Making of Wonder Woman 1984: Expanding the Wonder, Gal & Kristen: Friends Forever, Small But Mighty, Scene Study: The Open Road, Scene Study: The Mall, Gal & Krissy Having Fun, and Meet the Amazons), the Black Gold Infomercial, a Gag Reel, and a Wonder Woman 1984 Retro Remix feature.

First up today, Kino Lorber Studio Classics has officially set their long-awaited Spaceballs (1987) 4K Ultra HD for release on 4/12. The 4K disc will include Dolby Vision HDR and audio commentary by Mel Brooks. Audio will be includes in 5.1 and 2.0 (format TBA) with optional English subs. You’ll also get the film on Blu-ray, which will include lots of additional legacy extras. You can see the 4K art at left. We’ve updated our 4K Ultra HD Release List here at The Bits accordingly.

The company also has a nice March slate of catalog Blu-ray titles, which is expected to include Sidney Lanfield’s My Favorite Blonde (1942), David Butler’s Caught in the Draft (1941), and Elliott Nugent’s Nothing But the Truth (1941) on 3/2 (all Bob Hope films), followed by Don Jones’ The Forest (1982, for Code Red), Sam Peckinpah’s Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974), Robert Aldrich’s The Choirboys (1977), and Richard Fleischer’s The Don is Dead (1973) on 3/9, Jim O’Connoly’s Tower of Evil (1972, for Scorpion Releasing), Andy Anderson’s Positive I.D. All right, first things first today: I’m pleased to report that we did not have to evacuate from these wildfires here in SoCal after all. But it was a long night while we waited to find that out. Thankfully, when I stepped out this morning, it appeared that the fires had moved farther away from us, not closer. And this afternoon the evacuation orders all around us were lifted. So... whew!

It’s going to take a couple days to get back to normal around here, but I count that as a good problem to have, considering the alternative.

Now then... the big news today is that our industry and retail sources are telling us that Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is quietly preparing to release Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium, Rian Johnson’s Looper, and Andrew Niccol’s GATTACA in 4K Ultra HD early in 2021. Elysium and Looper are already available digitally in 4K, and a few European retailers have listed GATTACA for physical 4K release in March. [Read on here...]

All right, today’s news update is going to be a quick one. The reason is that I’m working to confirm a number of interesting rumors that I’ve heard in the last 24 hours, both on the interwebs and also from my own industry sources. I’m talking not one, but multiple interesting topics, including word of forthcoming releases and also more general stuff that’s going on in the home video industry right now. I’d actually hoped to be able to confirm one of them in time for this post, but I’m waiting on sources to get back to me. So I’ve decided to post a quick update now and come back with more as I hear it.
