We’re back!

Sorry for the absence of news posts over these last few days, folks. It’s been a busy and chaotic week here at The Bits—not so much work wise, but personal life. Our family’s had a flurry of doctors appointments (all routine, thanks goodness, but still disruptive) and I’ve had to run a car in for servicing. Man, I hate it when real life intrudes on my 4K disc time! Anyway, things seem to be settling down, so it’s time to catch up on news, and then I’ll be working on some new disc reviews myself over the coming days as well.

First though, we do have a couple of reviews to share with you from the team, including...

Tim’s look at Tarsem Singh’s The Cell (2000) in 4K Ultra HD from Arrow Video—something of a complicated title to review, given its unique production characteristics, as well as the fact that Arrow implemented a disc replacement program.

And Stephen’s thoughts on Robert Wise’s The Andromeda Strain (1971) in 4K Ultra HD, also from Arrow Video, a terrific sci-tech thriller adapting Michael Crichton’s influential 1969 novel of the same name.

Also here at the site this week, we’ve posted a new update of our Release Dates & Artwork section featuring all the latest Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD cover art and Amazon pre-order links. As always, whenever you order literally anything from Amazon after clicking through to them from one of our links, you’re helping to support our work here at the site and we really do appreciate it! Now then, Lionsgate has announced their next Lionsgate Limited 4K Steelbook release due on 6/17, which is none other than Christopher McQuarrie’s The Way of the Gun (2000). Look for it to offer Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos audio, with extras that include a pair of exclusive new featurettes (Intention Is Everything and Trigger Discipline). You’ll also get legacy extras that include audio commentary with McQuarrie and composer Joe Kraemer, an isolated music track with commentary by Kraemer, 6 Cast Interview clips, the Storyboard and Script for a Deleted Scene, the film’s trailer, and a TV spot. You can see the cover above left and you can pre-order it here.

Lionsgate has also set Carl Reiner’s All of Me (1984) as their next Vestron Video Collector’s Series Blu-ray on 6/17. Here’s the pre-order link for that.

Meanwhile, Universal has announced a surprise catalog title for 4K Ultra HD and 4K Steelbook release on 7/8: Mark Robson’s Earthquake! (1974). The title will include HDR10 high dynamic range, a new Dolby Atmos mix, and the original 2.1 Sensurround track in DTS as well. Here’s what the packaging looks like...

Earthquake! (4K Ultra HD Steelbook)

Kino Lorber Studio Classics has set Tamra Davis’ Billy Madison (1995) for 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray release on 7/29. You’ll get a new commentary by author and filmmaker Bryan Connolly with The Billy Gilmore Podcast host Wilson Smith, plus lots of legacy extras.

Troma Films has announced the 4K Ultra HD release of Lloyd Kaufman’s The Toxic Avenger (1984), The Toxic Avenger Part II (1989), The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie (1989), and Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV (2000) on 8/12. Note that hese films were first released a 4K box set back in 2023.

Paramount has set Savage Steve Holland’s Better Off Dead (1985) for 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray release on 8/5. They also have 1923: A Yellowstone Origin Story – Season Two coming on Blu-ray that same day.

GKids (via Shout! Factory) will release Mamoru Hosoda’s animated Wolf Children (2012) as an Amazon-exclusive 4K Steelbook on 8/5.

Per retail sources, it appears that Ryan Coogler’s Sinners (2025) will street on Blu-ray, DVD, 4K UHD, and 4K Steelbook from Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment on 7/22.

And Joel Souza’s now infamous film Rust (2024), starring Alec Baldwin, hits Blu-ray on 7/22 from Decal. As you may know, cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was sadly killed on the set of this film in a shooting accident.

In other news this afternoon, the complete second season of Tony Gilroy’s Andor series is now available on Disney+ and it might be the single best piece of Star Wars content produced to date. If you haven’t watched it yet, this series is well worth your time. Quality wise, I would put it right up there with the original Star Wars (1977), The Empire Strikes Back (1980), and Rogue One (2016). If you’re an OG fan of this franchise, or if you just love great serialized dramatic storyelling, this show is absolutely not to be missed.

Finally today, we need to take a moment to acknowledge the passing of actor Joe Don Baker, of Walking Tall (1973) fame. Fans will also know him from Charley Varrick (1973), Mitchell (1975), The Natural (1984), Fletch (1975), Cape Fear (1991), Mars Attacks! (1996), no less than three James Bond films including The Living Daylights (1987), GoldenEye (1995), and Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), and many more. He appeared in many TV roles as well. Baker was 89. You can read more here via The Hollywood Reporter.

We’ll leave you with a look at a few of the titles mentioned above and more, each with Amazon pre-order links if available...
